Costa Rica

Costa Rica, situated between Nicaragua and Panama borders both the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean. It has tropical and subtropical climate with a dry season (December to April) and a rainy season (May-November). The Coastal plains are separated by rugged mountains including over hundred volcanic cones, of which several are active.

Key Water Issues and Challenges

  • Frequent flooding of lowlands at onset of rainy season and landslides
  • Deforestation and land use change, largely a result of the clearing of land for cattle ranching and agriculture
  • Coastal marine pollution
