GWP at World Water Week 2015

Preparations for GWP’s participation in Stockholm World Water Week 2015 have been going on for several months and everything is now ready. The network is organising a number of events and GWP representatives will participate in many sessions throughout the week of 23-28 August.

This year marks the 25-year anniversary of the event, which is organised by Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI). The theme is “Water and Development”.

On the first day, Sunday 23 August, GWP is co-organising a workshop “Implementing the SDGs in the post-2015 development agenda”. The workshop will focus on what happens after the Sustainable Development goals (SDGs) are supposed to be decided on by the UN General Assembly in September. A dedicated water goal addressing the full range of core water issues has been proposed - GWP has campaigned for this - and in the next phase of the SDG process there will be a need for refinement of targets, development of indicators, financing mechanisms, and institutional arrangements for implementation and monitoring.

On the same day GWP is also co-organising two workshops related to urban issues: “Sustainable cities: a pipe dream or realistic future?” and “How to Secure Water and Energy amidst Rapid Urbanization”.

Launching New Publications

Other highlights are the launches of new publications.

On Monday evening, 24 August, GWP hosts the launch of a new Gender and Water Policy Study. This publication examines the implementation of the AMCOW gender and policy strategy, and was conducted by the Institute for Women's and Gender Studies (University of Pretoria) and the Water Research Commission (South Africa), supported by GWP.

On Tuesday, 25 August, the GWP Youth Engagement Strategy gets launched. This is a follow-up to the Gender Strategy that GWP launched at World Water Week last year and is part of GWP's wider Strategy "Towards 2020".

On Wednesday, 26 August, three joint UNICEF-GWP publications are launched. More information about them is available here. All the launches take place at the GWP booth - B17 - where GWP staff will be present all week. A selection of new and older publications will be available at the booth.

Live Streaming Launches

In addition to the launches at the World Water Week venue, the GWP Technical Committee is launching three new Technical Focus Papers and introducing an up-coming Background Paper. This event will be at the GWP global secretariat in Stockholm, and it will be live streamed online on Friday 28 August. More information about that here.
