GWP Participates in High Level Symposium on SDGs in Tajikistan

GWP Vice Chair and member of the Steering Committee, Drs. Alice Bouman-Dentener participated in the High-Level Symposium on SDG 6 and Targets in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on 9-11 August.

The event was organised by the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan in cooperation with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA), and was attended by over 700 representatives from 90 countries.

Representing GWP at the conference and speaking at the opening ceremony, Drs. Bouman-Dentener mentioned the success GWP had in its campaign for a dedicated water goal among the UN Sustainable Development Goals, confirmed last year in September - but added a cautionary question:

"We have a water goal – SDG#6, that addresses all aspects and dimensions of water security and includes the IRWM objective to integrate water across sectors, uses and boundaries. But do we have the robust governance process that allows for fair and sound trade-offs?"

To ensure a participatory and solid water governance for the future, Drs. Boumand-Dentener stressed the need for what GWP can offer: inclusive multi-stakeholder networking and a neutral platform for dialogues at different levels of society.

GWP co-organised a thematic session at the conference: Multi-stakeholder Partnerships initiatives for the SDGs and the International Decade for Water and Sustainable Development.
