Regional Cooperation on Green Growth

On April 17, 2013 in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, a workshop was held to discuss the report on Green Growth in the Aral Sea, prepared by the Global Water Partnership (GWP) of Central Asia and the Caucasus, the Scientific Information Center of the Interstate Coordination Water Commission (SIC ICWC) of Central Asia with the support from the Global Green Growth Institute (Korea). The workshop was attended by officials from national water agencies and executive bodies of ICWC.

Prof. Dukhovny presented the summary of the concept of green growth and its application to water resources. In his presentation "Green Growth: As we understand it, and what to do for its implementation?" Prof. Dukhovny also informed about process for preparation of the project document, and how the proposed priority areas for green growth in the water sector in the countries of Central Asia were selected. These recommendations are approximate, and the list of priorities may be amended or supplemented for each country in the process of national master-plans development. In the end of his speech the reporter noted that the comments and suggestions submitted by the parties will be considered and included in the final report.

 

Then the country's opinions were expressed by the following representatives: Mr. Sulton Rakhimov, First Deputy Minister of Land Reclamation and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan; Mr. Ravsham Mamutov  from MAWR of Uzbekistan; Mr. Zhienbayev voiced the views of the Committee for Water Resources of Kazakhstan; Mr. Djailoobaev, First Deputy General Director of the Department of Water Resources and Land Reclamation of Kyrgyzstan; Mr. Mohammadov, the Deputy Minister of Water Resources of Turkmenistan; Ms. Ekaterina Sakhvaeva, a representative of the Department of Water Resources and Land Reclamation of the Kyrgyz Republic; Mr. Hamidov, Head of BWO Syrdarya.

 

In conclusion, Prof. Dukhovny noted that the main purpose of the report was to identify the interest in green development for the region. He expressed the hope that the national experts and officials will send more comments to finalize report processing.
