Special Programmes

GWP works with strategic allies on specific programmes as part of its work to see IWRM implemented in different contexts. A few of those programmes are listed below.

WACDEP

The Water, Climate and Development Programme (WACDEP) has been created to support the integration of water security and climate change adaptation into development planning processes and the design of financing and investment strategies. In fact, water is the principal medium through which people, ecosystems and economies will experience the impacts of climate change. WACDEP can enable successfull planning for better water use in a world that would otherwise be severely affected by climate change and poor development planning. Read more.

Deltas

“Enabling Delta Life” is a collaborative initiative for water management and governance in deltas between the Global Water Partnership and the Delta Alliance, supported by the Netherlands Ministry of Development Cooperation. The Delta Alliance is an international knowledge-driven network organization with the mission of improving the resilience of the world’s deltas.

The objective of the initiative is to stimulate increased cooperation worldwide among those involved in the governance of deltas.

ANBO

The objective of this programme is to strengthen regional cooperation at the political, economic and stakeholder level for sustainable management of transboundary water resources in Africa contributing to peace and security, stability and poverty alleviation, relying on African knowledge.

The programme is supported by the European Commission and implemented by the African Network of Basin Organisations (ANBO) in partnership with GWP under the overall framework of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW).

Flood Management

The Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM) is a joint initiative of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and GWP. It promotes the concept of Integrated Flood Management (IFM) as a new approach to flood management with the aim of efficiently using floodplains and minimizing losses of life from flooding. The Programme aims to combine IWRM principles into flood management practices and vice versa. The Programme has established the HelpDesk for Integrated Flood Management.

Drought Management

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO)-GWP Integrated Drought Management Programme (IDMP) focusing on enhancing drought resilience (in collaboration with the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, and others). This programme builds on the success of the WMO-GWP Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM), and will establish a HelpDesk similar to that available for Integrated Flood Management.
