In December 2010 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution (A/RES/65/154) declaring 2013 as the International Year of Water Cooperation. UN-Water then tasked UNESCO to be the lead agency for the Year. UNESCO will officially launch the International Year of Water Cooperation 2013 on 11 February 2013 in Paris.
GWP will participate in a session on “Science, Capacity Building and Partnerships for Water Cooperation” at this high-level event, with distinguished scientists, UN agencies and youth from the world over. The winner of the official slogan/messages of the International Year on Water Cooperation 2013 will be announced.
Worldwide celebration on water cooperation
The Year will be a worldwide celebration on water cooperation, aiming at raising awareness to increase cooperation on water issues and at highlighting the challenges facing water resources management in light of the increasing demand for access to water. It will also focus on major issues regarding water security for all, and the sound and effective management of transboundary waters. Among many other aims and objectives, the Year is expected to strengthen dialogue and cooperation on water issues at all levels with key stakeholders.
