WACDEP Website

The Water, Climate and Development Programme (WACDEP) has been created to support the integration of water security and climate change adaptation into development planning processes and the design of financing and investment strategies. In fact, water is the principal medium through which people, ecosystems and economies will experience the impacts of climate change. WACDEP can enable successfull planning for better water use in a world that would otherwise be severely affected by climate change and poor development planning.

"In the face of climate change, partnerships such as those launched in the Water, Climate and Development Programme with Global Water Partnership represent a good first step."

Hon. Edna Molewa, Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, South Africa, and former President of AMCOW, at the 3rd Africa Water Week

  • The origins of WACDEP

    Raison d'être of the project

The African Union Heads of State and Government adopted the Sharm el Sheikh Declaration on Water and Sanitation in July 2008, emphasizing their political priority for water and sanitation. In response to the climate change commitments in this declaration, AMCOW in collaboration with GWP, developed the 'Water, Climate and Development Programme'.

  • Goal and objectives

    Three main objectives

WACDEP aims to (a) integrate water security and climate resilience in development planning, (b) develop partnerships and capacities to build resilience to climate change through better water management, and (c) develop 'no regret' financing and investment strategies for water security and climate change adaptation.

  • Implementation

Where and when WACDEP is active

The programme runs from May 2011 to April 2016. Initially, WACDEP starts in eight African countries and five transboundary river basins / aquifer systems all over the continent.
