In spite of local uncertainties about the intensity and variability of climate change, it is urgent to initiate adaptation measures in river basin management, including transboundary basins. This publication provides guidance on how to prepare and implement a strong, realistic and operational medium-to-long-term plan for adapting to climate change through a number of case studies and “lessons learned”. This Handbook was produced jointly by GWP and the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO) in order to capture experiences with planning and implementing IWRM.
The handbook provides an insight into the key issues linked to managing and restoring aquatic ecosystems. It illustrates the benefits provided by aquatic ecosystems and gives practical examples where the application of IWRM answered to economic challenges without jeopardizing ecosystems. It draws on real-life experiences of public authorities, water practitioners and local communities in managing national and transboundary basins. This publication is part of the ‘Integrated Drought Management Tools and Guidelines Series’. These National Drought Management Policy Guidelines
are based on available literature, and draw findings from relevant works wherever possible. It is a resource guide/material
for practitioners, not an academic paper.
