Slovenia: Ecosystem restoration of Lake Cerknica (#448)

Lake Cerknica is one of the most important Slovenian Karst sights known worldwide. The phenomenon of intermittent (disappearing) Lake Cerknica has become famous worldwide as an area where cattle can graze, farmers can plow fields, catch fish and drive boats in the same place. A project (2007-2009) supported by EU funding (LIFE06NAT/SLO/000069) aimed to restore the unique ecosystem of Lake Cerknica. This project was possible due to a favorable legal setting - Lake Cerknica was included in a European network of nature protection areas Natura 2000. In 2006 it was registered as Ramsar site

Making strides in Water Governance - Malawi National Youth Water Network

Following the SADC Water Week Conference held at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe, Malawi from the 13-15 May, 2015, the Malawi National Youth Water Network (MNYWN) was formed on the 14th of May, 2015. The setting up of the Network was in line with the SADC program for the African Minister’s Council on Water (AMCOW) Policy and Strategy on Mainstreaming Youth in the Water and Sanitation Sector through the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Water Aid and Malawi Water Partnership.

IWRM Capacity Development

GWP supports mandated institutions in designing and implementing water-related policies, legislation, action plans, strategies, and programmes based on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). GWP offers IWRM technical capacity development activities for officials and technical experts working in the field of water and environmental resources management. Examples include professionals working with river basin organisations, catchment agencies, national, and provincial/state governments.

Unveiling the secrets of rainwater harvesting in Santorini: Ancient cisterns provide knowledge for contemporary sustainable water management

Five old, hand crafted rainwater storage cisterns located in the villages of Pyrgos, Mesa Gonia and Exo Gonia, were in the focus of a research project recently concluded in Santorini. The project aimed at advancing rainwater harvesting in the island of Santorini, undertaken by the University of Cornell and Global Water Partnership – Mediterranean, with the support of the Municipality and the Water Supply and Sewage Authority of Thera (Santorini).

Benin celebrates World Water Day with water sector opportunities for youth employment debate

On Tuesday, March 22, 2016, the 23rd edition of the World Water Day was celebrated by the National Institute of water (INE) and CWP Benin with support from CARE, Abms PSI and water Company FIFA. A panel debate was organized on the Campus of the University of Abomey Calavi (UAC), in the presence of the Rector of the University Brice SINSIN on the theme “Water sector in Benin: What employment opportunities for young people?" in relation to the global topic “Water and Employment."

WACDEP Zimbabwe provides practical skills in proposal writing for funding mini hydro projects

A capacity building workshop focusing on project preparation and financing in Zimbabwe for climate resilient projects was held at Monteclair Hotel in Nyanga from the 26th to the 28th of July 2015. The workshop was attended by 21 participants from selected government Ministries, such as the Ministry of Environment, Water and Climate (MEWC). The workshop was aimed at equipping selected participants with information, knowledge and practical skills in the preparation of proposal writing involving mini hydro projects for possible funding.  The feasibility study focused on Siya Dam mini hydro power generation project.

Network Officer of GWPO visits GWP China Regional Secretariat

On September18 and 19, 2014, in Beijing, the Senior Network Officer Angela Klaeusen visited the Secretariat of the GWP China to conduct a two-day working meeting for reviewing the progress of GWP China activities in 2014 and preparing the plan of 2015.
