The Fifth World Water Forum

GWP China has a delegation group of four members, Prof. Wang Hao, Vice Chair; Mr. Zheng Rugang, Coordinator; Dr. Jiang Yunzhong, Communication Officer and Ms. Ma Yilin, Program Officer, to attend the Fifth World Water Forum (WWF5) in Istanbul, Turkey, March 16 to 22, 2009.

The WWF5 is the one of most powerful global water events held every three years.

The GWP China delegation, amidst one-week long water event, participated in sessions respectively organized by GWPO, Ministry of Water Resources of the PRC and China Institute of Hydropower and Water Resources Research. One of most significances of GWP China delegation was the exclusive meeting with Dr. Ania Grobicki, new ES of GWPO. With Dr. Bjorn Guterstam and Mr. Khalid Mohtadullah present, the GWP China delegation conducted discussion with Dr. Grobicki related work plan and long-term development of GWP China and further cooperation between GWPO and GWP China that saw optimistic and achievable outputs.

The WWF5 brought GWP China with new experiences and key issues to consider:

First, while recognizing gradually critical global problems due to climate change, we must adapt climate change to IWRM.

Second, the integrated management of river basin is still the priority among water issues.

Third, the mechanisms of public and women participation are important.

Fourth, the protection of ecosystem and environment plays crucial role in IWRM which is vital for both human and nature.

Fifth, as for its nexus of the food, energy, environmental and poverty crises facing the world, the water sector remains woefully under-funded. The financial needs of the sector as a whole are enormous for the purpose of achieving a sustainable financing of the water sector and sustainable development of water resources.
