Climate Change Adaptation at Community Level: The Role of Microfinance Institutions

BWP in collaboration with Institute of Microfinance (InM) organised a seminar on the role of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) in Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) at community level on 15 November 2014 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

More than 200 participated for the seminar representing Government Organisations, Academia, National Experts in the field of microcredit and climate change adaptation (CCA) and disaster management, NGOs and Microfinance Institutes of the country. The seminar was organised by Bangladesh Water Partnership (BWP) under GWP SAS Water and Climate Resilience Programme (WACREP) with the collaboration of InM. The meeting consisted of three sessions; the inauguration, technical sessions followed by the open discussion and way forward.

The main objective of the seminar is to identify bankable CCA projects and challenges faced in implementing such projects at village level. The seminar assisted in identifying the possible links between microfinance services and CCA projects; highlighted the opportunities and risks of these links for reducing vulnerability among the peasants in Bangladesh. The discussions were targeted towards community based approaches in CCA, targeting women for micro credits, bridging gaps of Government and InM for CCA projects through MFIs.

The seminar took the attention of national print and electronic media due to the novelty of the topic and they have reflected the story in Bangla-native language and English.
