GWP at UN Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction

A delegation from GWP is travelling to Sendai, Japan, to take part in the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) on 14-18 March. GWP will co-lead a working session on “Integrated Water Resources Management” together with WMO and UNESCO.

The session, on 15 March, will include opening statements from WMO’s Secretary General and Chair of UN-Water Michel Jarraud and other high-level dignitaries. GWP’s Chair, Dr. Ursula Schaefer-Preuss will make remarks and moderate the panel discussion, which focuses on country level experiences and the way forward.

The conference is hosted by the Government of Japan in cooperation with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). The WCDRR will review the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action and is expected to adopt a successor framework for disaster risk reduction.

Last year, with inputs from its partners, GWP led the development of a brief on Water and Disaster Risk, which is a contribution to the consultation leading to the conference. This document spells out GWP’s and its partners’ messages for a post-2015 framework. The final WCDRR outcome document, “Post-2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction”, is still being negotiated among member states.
