Poland

Poland is situated by the Baltic Sea and borders Belarus, Czech Republic, Germany, Lithuania, Russia, Slovakia and Ukraine. Poland’s climate is temperate with cold moderately severe winters and mild summers. Precipitation is frequent in both summer and winter. It is rich in, among other things, coal, sulfur, copper and natural gas.

Key Water Issues and Challenges

  • Frequent flooding
  • Regional differences in available water resources; scarcity in some regions, flooding in others
  • Water pollution from industrial and municipal sources
  • Air pollution remains serious because of sulfur dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants, and the resulting acid rain has caused forest damage
  • Historically, Poland is an area of conflict because of flat terrain and absence of natural barriers on the North European Plain
