Municipality of Puerto Cortes

Interview with Mr. Allan David Ramos Molina, Mayor of Puerto Cortes.

What is the vision and mission of your organization?

Our vision is to contribute to the quality of life of the inhabitants by being an exemplary municipality that promotes social, economic and environmental development both in the urban and rural areas, based on the principles of civil society participation, equity, respect and transparency and providing an effective and efficient delivery of public services.

Our mission is to promote the integral development of the municipality through the efficient delivery of municipal services in order to improve the quality of life of the population by incorporating the active participation of citizens.

Why did you decide to become a GWP Partner?

The municipality of Puerto Cortes has long been committed to the integrated management of water resources - from the management of the main areas that produce water to the wastewater treatment.

So, taking into account that GWP is a platform that manages knowledge on IWRM and also promotes the exchange of experiences that builds capacity on IWRM, it was apparent that being part of the network was an opportunity to enhance knowledge and thus consolidate IWRM as a central part of the development planning for the municipality.

What have you found to be the benefits of being a GWP Partner?

  1. Have our experiences known through GWP and to influence directly or indirectly in other institutions that see the Municipality of Puerto Cortes as a role model.
  2. The constant exchange of information on water related issues, between GWP Honduras and GWP.
  3. The support in obtaining information/knowledge to help consolidate IWRM in the municipality, and in this way influencing other municipalities through different platforms in which the Municipality participates.

What is one challenge facing the management of water resources in your region?

The main challenge is the lack of planning, organization and actions that are based on the watershed. Also isolated actions that are executed by sectors and municipalities, without taking into account the integrity of the basin and the optimal use of financial and technical resources that should come from inter-agency coordination and the involvement of all stakeholders.

Are there any special projects or initiatives that you would like more widely known?

The municipality has had a successful experience in the decentralization of the water system and the creation of the water and sanitation company, also in the project for the protection and management of the watershed of Rio Tulian.
