SDG 6.5.1 IWRM Action Planning Course

The SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme provides a self-paced online course on UNDP Cap-Net’s Virtual Campus for practitioners interested in designing and implementing action plans to improve Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in a multi-stakeholder process.

The course takes each participant primarily through a comprehensive training aimed at designing government-endorsed multi-stakeholder action plans to improve IWRM implementation. From concept to implementation, the course provides a clear guide and transferable project management expertise for the successful roll out of action planning activities under Stage 2 of the SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme. From the definition of why having an IWRM Action Plan is important to the creation of a multi-stakeholder engagement process and the design of a monitoring system for implementation of the actions, this training will offer you everything you need to design and implement a successful IWRM Action Plan.

The course is based on information presented in the Acceleration Package for IWRM action planning prepared by the SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme and other relevant resources.

The course is customisable and self-paced, and will require around 8-15 hours, depending on participants’ prior knowledge and engagement with reading material, discussion fora and completing assessments.

For whom?

This course is for those that are most involved in the making of national IWRM action plans, including civil servants in water-related ministries and agencies, representatives of global, regional, national, and sub-national organisations, including civil society organisations, universities, intergovernmental organisations and professional associations, as well as individual consultants involved in supporting IWRM implementation. Anyone can take the course, whether or not they are directly involved in the activities of the SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme. The course is designed to take into account different levels of prior knowledge, so you do not have to already be an expert in IWRM.

Learning objectives

The goal of this course is to increase the capacity of participants to develop and implement an IWRM Action Plan. At the end of this course, participants will:

  • have a detailed understanding on the content and scope of an IWRM Action Plan,
  • know how to collect and develop baseline material and design a fully-fledged IWRM Action Plan
  • have acquired a set of skills and methodologies for the preparation and implementation of participatory consultation processes and instruments
  • be able to implement the necessary steps and instruments to enhance sustainability and take-up of the Action Plan

The course is available on the UNDP Cap-Net Virtual Campus in English, French and Spanish.
