SDG 6.5.1 monitoring activity in West Africa

The SDG 6.5.1 monitoring process started in the region where UNEP-DHI through GWP is bringing financial and technical assistance to 7 countries out the 15 ECOWAS member states to facilitate the data collection and reporting process.

The countries are at various levels of progress. In all the countries, the facilitator is working with the focal point and experts committee. They have already made the inventory of main stakeholders to be involved in the process and letters were already sent to them with questionnaire or drafted and ready to be sent.

In Burkina Faso, the data collection process has gone far with a meeting of the expert committee to review them. Letters of invitation will be sent on July 1st to convene stakeholders for the validation meeting on July 15, 2020.

In Nigeria, the focal point, Engr. Peter SULE has indicated the reporting exercise has commenced in full and that there is a good progress on the process. The same assurances were given by the Niger Focal point, Dr. Issouf SANDAO, who is closely working with the facilitator and the experts team. Maxwell BOATENG-GYMAH from Ghana is working closely with the focal point Mrs. Adwoa PAINTSIL and the process will be delivered according to schedule. In the Gambia, the collection process is coming to an end soon with the stakeholders’ validation meeting planned for July 22nd.

GWP-WA has negotiated with the ECOWAS Water Resources Management Center that agrees to support financially the remaining countries with the technical assistance of GWP. The assistance mechanism is being finalized to get all ECOWAS countries completing the UN SDG 6.5.1 survey by July 31, 2020.
