This initiative, led by the National Directorate of Hydraulics (DNH) and the Mali Country Water Partnership (CWP-Mali), marks a major step forward in hydrometeorological monitoring of non-perennial watercourses.
Smart Stations for Real-Time Data
The installed equipment now enables continuous measurement of:
- Water level
- Rainfall
- Temperature
- Relative humidity
Thanks to microcontrollers connected to pressure sensors and GSM cards, the data is transmitted in real time, with coverage ensured for two years via dedicated data chips and internet packages.

A Successful Technical Mission
The mission mobilized a multidisciplinary team composed of a hydraulic engineer, a hydrology technician, a representative of PNE-Mali, and a driver. The work included:
- Procurement and use of construction materials
- Building shelters and protective fencing
- Involvement of local labor
- Full operationalization of the stations
Official Handover and Institutional Commitment
On December 16, an official ceremony was held to hand over the equipment to DNH and Mali Meteo, in the presence of the press and technical partners. This symbolic moment highlighted Mali’s commitment to strengthening its early warning capacities against climate risks.

Towards Intelligent Risk Mapping
This installation delivers on Product 4 of the AFCIA project, validated in February 2025, and paves the way for integrating hydrological data into the Climate Risk and Flood Management Project (PGRCI) early warning system.
With the support of the Climate Technology Centre & Network (CTCN) and the Global Water Partnership in West Africa (GWP-WA), Koula is becoming a pilot site for intelligent and inclusive climate risk management.
