Memorandum of Understanding Wetlands Sahel – GWP-WA: Partnership for Water and Ecological Resilience in West Africa

On December 5, 2025, in Ouagadougou, Wetlands International Sahel Office (WISO) and the Global Water Partnership West Africa (GWP-WA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) marking the start of strengthened cooperation for sustainable water resource management, wetland conservation, and biodiversity protection in the Sahel region.

A Context Marked by Major Challenges

West Africa faces critical challenges: climate variability, demographic pressure, ecosystem degradation, and water insecurity. These challenges require concerted and innovative responses. This partnership is part of that dynamic, mobilizing stakeholders for inclusive and sustainable solutions.

Partnership Objectives

The MoU aims to:

  • Promote Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) as a strategic approach for equitable development.
  • Strengthen community resilience to climate risks and natural disasters.
  • Enhance the ecosystem services provided by wetlands, key drivers of stability and prosperity.
  • Share knowledge and develop innovative solutions, in synergy with international conventions (Ramsar, Paris Agreement, Sendai Framework).

This collaboration aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • SDG 6: Sustainable management of water and aquatic ecosystems.
  • SDG 13: Climate action.
  • SDG 15: Protection and restoration of terrestrial ecosystems.
  • SDG 17: Strengthening partnerships for development.

Concrete Initiatives Planned

The two organizations commit to implementing joint actions such as:

  • Designing and implementing joint projects on wetland and water resource management.
  • Promoting capacity building and knowledge sharing.
  • Organizing workshops, seminars, and research programs for innovative solutions.

Strong Voices for Lasting Commitment

During the ceremony, Mr. Sidi Coulibaly, Acting Executive Secretary of GWP-WA, stated:
“Alone, we go faster; together, we go further. Today, we choose to go further, together, to build a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable West Africa.”

For his part, Dr. Karounga Keita, Regional Director of Wetlands International Sahel Office, emphasized:
“Wetlands are ecological and socio-economic treasures. This partnership is a unique opportunity to join forces to preserve these vital ecosystems and strengthen the resilience of Sahelian communities.”

This partnership reflects the determination of both institutions to turn challenges into opportunities for populations and ecosystems, while aligning their actions with international commitments and regional strategies.
