West Africa: Official Launch of GWP’s 2026–2030 Strategy for Strengthened Water Governance

The Global Water Partnership (GWP) officially launched its 2026–2030 Strategy at the regional level during the 12th Partners’ Assembly of GWP-WA.

This new strategic orientation marks a decisive step for water governance in West Africa, placing financing mobilization, inclusive governance, and digital transformation at the heart of priorities.

An Ambitious Vision for 2030

Presented by Per BERTILSSON, representing GWPO, the strategy reaffirms the vision of a water-secure world and sets ambitious goals:

  • Influence €15 billion in investments in the water sector;
  • Mobilize €500 million for strategic projects;
  • Improve governance in 150 contexts and support 60 countries for sustainable water management.

Three Pillars to Transform the Region

The Strategy is built on:

  1. Finance and Investment: Increase the quality and efficiency of funding, integrating innovative instruments and public-private partnerships.
  2. Governance: Strengthen national frameworks and transboundary cooperation.
  3. Knowledge and Capacity: Develop technical hubs, sharing platforms, and communities of practice.

Progress Already Visible

GWP’s project portfolio has grown from €250 million to €400 million in just one year. Key initiatives include:

  • African Water Investment Forum, mobilizing 80 projects and 194 investors for an estimated volume of USD 10–12 billion;
  • African Water Investment Program, now a global model;
  • Creation of the International Water Investment Council, under the G20 framework.

A Call for Collective Action

Closing the presentation, GWPO emphasized the need for stronger partnerships, financial innovation, and greater social inclusion, with particular attention to gender equality and climate resilience.
