GWP Participation in World Water Day 2011

The theme of World Water Day on 22 March 2011 is “Water for Cities: Responding to Urban Challenges” The GWP network, with more than 2,300 partners worldwide, celebrates World Water Day with a number of activities and events in different regions of the globe and with participation in the main event in Cape Town.

GWP Executive Secretary Dr Ania Grobicki participates in the side event “Water – the Urban Challenge”, in Cape Town to discuss how the world’s economic growth and social welfare depend on the sustainable management of the world’s water resources. Also participating from GWP are Southern Africa Regional Coordinator Ruth Beukman and Regional Project Coordinator Andrew Takawira, Eastern Africa Coordinator Simon Thuo and GWP Technical Committee member Mike Muller. GWP Eastern Africa Coordinator Simon Thuo is a panelist  in the side event “Water and Disasters”, addressing reducing risk and vulnerability as an essential goal to be pursued given the rapid increase in disasters worldwide. The opening speech is by HRH Prince Willem Alexander who is the Chair of UNSGAB and a GWP Patron. The panel discussion is facilitated by GWP Patron Margaret Catley-Carlson. Read more.
