Regional Photography Contest, “Water, Gender and Youth”

GWP Central America holds a photography contest every year to engage partners, youth and other actors around water issues. The winner of the contest this year is Francisco Gil from Panama, who says that “youth is the main pillar for the conservation of our water resources”. The photograph was taken in Chiguiri Arriba in the province of Coclé.

The theme of the contest was the importance of involving more young people and women in water management - water security will only be possible insofar as water management is more equitable and inclusive.

Both these cross-cutting issues are part of GWP’s strategy, the first is based on the Dublin principle on the fundamental role of women in water supply, management and protection. GWP promotes that the interests and needs of women and men are equally considered when projecting, implementing and monitoring the impact of water resources management policies and programs and the related development challenges.

In Latin America there are more than 106 million young people, the participation of youth in decision-making about water is fundamental for the social, economic and environmental development of our region. Youth play an important role in the transformation of societies by bringing their energy and ideas to the table.

The photograph will be published in the GWP Central America calendar, along with 11 other photographs chosen by a selection committee composed by Enrique Merlos from the National Foundation for Development of El Salvador (GWP partner), Abigail Quic who is part of the Central American Water Youth Networkand Monika Ericson GWP’s Senior Communications Officer.
