GWP Patron Johnson Sirleaf Encourages Countries to Support a Water Goal

AMCOW Executive Secretary Bai Mass Taal delivered a statement from Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of the Republic of Liberia and Patron of Global Water Partnership, at the opening ceremony of World Water Week 2014:

Honorable Ministers, distinguished leaders,

I regret I will not be joining you for the World Water Week 2014 in Stockholm. As many of you are aware, Liberia is in a sub-region experiencing an unprecedented outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). We have chosen to remain home and lead the national response.

But we cannot forget the importance of access to clean water, adequate sanitation and hygiene. This is a crucial year to raise the issue of water around the world, which is why earlier this year, I agreed to serve as Patron of the Global Water Partnership.

Liberia along with a growing number of countries has expressed our support for a dedicated water goal in the Post-2015 Development Agenda, and we encourage other countries to do the same.

I ask that as you carry out discussions this week you remember what is happening here in Liberia and our sub-region, and of our urgent need for water security, for sanitation, and for water management.

I thank you.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
