GWP at UN Water and Disasters Meeting

GWP Chair Dr. Ursula Schaefer-Preuss participated in the Sixth Meeting for High-level Experts and Leaders Panel on Water and Disasters (HELP) and the Second UN Special Thematic Session on Water and Disasters in New York, USA, in November.

GWP was invited to prepare and host a panel, "Multi-stakeholder partnership for Water-related Disaster Risk Reduction", and attended as partner and presenter in the UNSGAB Dialogue as part of the final sessions of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB).

“We had, due to our active involvement and presence in the various meetings, panels, and workshops, a high visibility with a high degree of interest by GWP partners being involved during this next phase of implementing the 2030 SDG Agenda, focusing on Goal no 6 and target 6.5,” said Dr. Schaefer-Preuss. “Particular interest was expressed by partners in our plans related to water and urbanization. It will be important to have the water agenda prominently included in the preparations for the next Habitat Conference in Quito, Ecuador in October 2016.”

The HELP meeting also decided to better co-ordinate the water and disaster agenda with other sectors, and in particular with water and climate change.

The Second Thematic UN Special Session on Water and Disasters was honored by the attendance of HIH the Crown Prince of Japan, who delivered, in the presence of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, a lecture titled, “Quest for better relations between people and water,” based on his own research through Japanese history.
