Improving Water Availability in Costa Rica

GWP Costa Rica has been invited to participate in a pilot project on the improvement of the availability of water. About 61% of the country’s 4.3 million people are located in urban areas, and while there has been significant progress in the past decade in expanding access to water supply and sanitation, the sector faces key challenges in low sanitation connections, poor service quality, and low cost recovery.

The initiative is financed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Costa Rica is one of three chosen countries together with Oman and the Philippines. The objective of the project is to build capacity at the national level in the compilation, management and interpretation of data on water resources and in the use of advanced techniques to improve resources management. This will allow identifying the gaps in knowledge, especially information regarding underground water. GWP Costa Rica was able to share with the IAEA, the causes and actions needed to improve water management in their country.
