25th International River Symposium to Focus on Communities, Climate & Biodiversity

From 27 to 30 November, conveners will meet in Vienna and online for the 25th International River Symposium

For 25 years, International River Symposium has been providing a unique global forum for river managers, policy developers, scientists, consultants, students, NGOs, indigenous and community organisations as well as water user sectors and business and industry representatives to collaborate to improve the sustainable management and resilience of rivers all over the world. The programme of the International River Symposium 2022 testifies to years of cooperation in built-up networks for the development and exchange of information and knowledge in the field of integrated water management.

This year, in Vienna, Austria and online, from 27 to 30 November, the symposium will host high-level speakers and keynote presenters such as Veronica Manfredi - Director General Environment of the European CommissionNeeta Pokhrei - Water Lead of the Asian Development Bank and Dr Stuart Orr - Freshwater Manager of the World Wide Fund for Nature.

About 15 thematic sessions were gathered and split into focus areas, revolving around river cities, water security & equity as well as forming new partnerships and securing healthy environment for all. The sessions will further be supported by partner workshops and stakeholder meetings hosting several keynote speakers from government, science as well as private sector.

The organizers also want to put an emphasis on ways how to protect and restore the remaining free flowing rivers, ideally on a global scale. Therefore, taking place on 29 Tuesday from 13.45 to 17.15 CET, an event called FREE FLOW will host various speakers across the whole Europe to kickstart the effort.

Moreover, the symposium will announce the 3 finalists of the European Riverprize 2022. First awarded in 2013, the European Riverprize celebrates excellence in the management, conservation and development of Europe’s rivers, wetlands and surrounding communities. The projects on these rivers demonstrate innovation, originality, and creativity in response to the specific challenges they each face.
