GWP Moldova presented lessons from river basin planning

Dr. Dumitru Drumea of GWP Moldova shared experiences with development of Bic River basin management plan and involvement of local authorities in the implementation of the program of measures.

Liaison Bureau of Central and Eastern European Network of Basin Organization (CEE-NBO) organized the Conference “Water Management in Central and Eastern Europe: Problems and Challenges” on 21-22 May in Sofia, Bulgaria in frame of Green Week 2012, dedicated to water.

GWP Moldova started development of an action plan to integrate water resources management in the Basin in 2009. The first step was to bring together local authorities at a workshop which involved local authorities and key stakeholders.

GWP Moldova has been asked to take the lead in improving planning and management practices, drawing on GWP resources and experience. Local authorities, for their part, undertook to allocate resources to develop a management plan for the basin.

“The Bic River basin presents both problems for water management – pollution and waste disposal and opportunities – flood protection, tourism and organic farming”, said Dr. Drumea.

Bic is right tributary of the Dniester River. Its basin covers area of 2,150 km² and the river has a length of 155 km.

CEE-NBO members proposed a number of possible joint activities with GWP Moldova and its partner organizations such as methodological assistance in the development of management practices in different parts of Moldova and a training of municipal and public authorities from Moldova in Romania in cooperation with French Picardie Region.

The conference also stimulated development of a new water and climate change course curricula at the Free International University of Moldova (ULIM) that could be modified for training of local municipal and public authorities in different domains of water management and climate change adaptation.

In addition, Dr. Drumea chaired Panel 1: Drought and water scarcity problems in Central and Eastern Europe and proposed solutions.
