GWP Ukraine developed online course on IWRM and climate change

NGO MAMA-86, host institution of GWP Ukraine, successfully completed the first part of an online course on "Integrated Water Resources Management in the Climate Change Conditions" in May 2013.

GWP Ukraine initiated the course as a regional programme, supported by GWP Central and Eastern Europe. Its goal is to advance IWRM through theory and practice, however, tailored to specific conditions of Ukraine and other post-Soviet countries in the region.

National Environmental Strategy and National Action Plan adopted in 2010 have declared implementation of integrated water resources management (IWRM) and harmonization of national water legislation with six key European Union water directives, including Water Framework Directive, as strategic tasks for the period until 2015.

GWP Ukraine strategically contributes to IWRM knowledge development and promotion of national good practices on implementation of integrated water resources management and water planning in Ukraine.

"The course presents experiences of national water experts for audience in Ukraine and abroad, primarily in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia and Caucasus", said Andriy Demydenko of GWP Ukraine. Therefore, the course is developed in Russian language with English slides and subtitles.

The course comprises the following four lectures:

  • Lecture 1 Features of the Transition to the IWRM in Post-Soviet Countries, introduction by Andriy Demydenko, GWP Ukraine and Department of Environment Modeling, IPMMS-Cybernetics Center, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
  • Lecture 2 EU Water Framework Directive: General Principles and Methodology for Ecological Status Assessment by Dr. Serhiy Afanasyev, Institute of Hydrobiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
  • Lecture 3 Hydromorphological Assessment of River Water Bodies by Prof. Oleksandr Obodovsky, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv
  • Lecture 4 Mathematical Modeling for Decision Support in Water Resource Management by Dr. Mark Zheleznyak, Head of Department of Environmental Modeling, Institute of Mathematical Machines and Systems, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

Prof. Obodovsky made a first presentation of the course to a group of master’s students, postgraduates and staff of Hydrology and Hydroecology Department, Geographic Faculty of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv on 14 May 2013.
