Benin: CWP and PROTOS train on WASH best practices at IWRM demonstration sites

The CWP Benin and PROTOS strengthen the capacity of local actors for the promotion of good hygiene and sanitation practices around agricultural production units and standpipes at Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) demonstration sites in the Mono and Couffo departments.

As part of the 4th phase of the Multi Year Program (MYP IV), the two organizations gathered on 7 and 8 June 2018 20 local actors including 7 women took place from the municipality of Dogbo, for a training on the "Promotion of good hygiene and basic sanitation practices around agricultural production units and standpipes of IWRM demonstration sites in Mono and Couffo".

The aim was to strengthen the technical capacities of these local actors so that they, in turn, raise awareness of good hygiene and sanitation practices among the populations living near IWRM promotion sites. There were theoretical and practical steps.

For the theoretical phase, communications were given by CWP’s Mrs. Aurore E. BIOKOU, Training and Communication Manager and Mr. Guillaume HOUINATO, of Protos Lokossa followed by discussions and form filling exercises.

The practical phase of the training took place at the IWRM demonstration site of Houéganmè in Dogbo on Friday 8 June 2018. This enabled the facilitators to apply awareness raising techniques and tools on the themes of "protecting water resources against pollution" and "developing and combating the waste of water resources".

This exercise enabled the trainers and participants to identify the shortcomings of the animation so that the awareness objectives could be achieved. The initiative was welcomed by the community which came out massively to take part in this animation.

Adopting good hygiene and sanitation practices around agricultural units and around artesian drilling is a long-term task. Once the right thing is done, the community will benefit from the health, economic and social gains.
