Burkina Faso, the IDPM requested to support national drought plan development

On Friday 27 July, the team in charge of developing the national drought plan for Burkina Faso met with the CWP-Burkina Faso Executive Secretariat Team to discuss the participation of the Integrated Drought Management platform set up by the CWP Burkina Faso under IDMP- West Africa in the process.

The elaboration of the national plan is part of the implementation of a decision of the 13th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. The main objective of this initiative is to help countries strengthen their resilience to drought by implementing concrete actions to be prepared for drought episodes.

Burkina Faso, which had expressed its commitment and interest to the Executive Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, was therefore notified to take part in this initiative.

The Global Mechanism has recruited a consultant whose mission is to develop a national drought plan for the country based on disaster risk reduction principles. This consultant developed a report that will be validated during at a national meeting.

During this meeting, the consultants and the CWP Burkina Faso Executive Secretariat Team exchanged on the assets, the methodology of implementation, the strengths and weaknesses of the platform. They concluded that the platform can be strengthened and equipped on prevention, technology and the mechanism to be put in place.

CWP Executive Secretariat Team recommended that various stakeholders affected by drought need to be consulted in the process. The platform established by CWP- Burkina Faso in the implementation of IDMP to bring together the various actors in the fight against drought in Burkina Faso, has been identified as a first-choice actor.
