Fighting drought, the GWP-WA shares its experience

On Friday, August 31, 2018, GWP-WA hosted the consultant mandated by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification who is conducting a literature review on drought management initiatives in Burkina Faso. Professor Michel SEDOGO, recruited as a consultant, has the mission of helping Burkina Faso to develop a National Drought Management Plan.

For this purpose, he was accompanied by Mr. Alassane TOURE from the Permanent Secretariat of the National Council for Sustainable Development (SP/CNDD) of the Ministry in charge of the environment of Burkina Faso.

The team met Mr. Armand HOUANYE, Executive Secretary and GWP-WA Staff to, on the one hand, present and initiate the process that will lead to the elaboration of the National Drought Management Plan in synergy with all stakeholders and, on the other hand, to benefit from the expertise and experience of GWP-WA in integrated drought management through the analysis of existing documentation to this effect, and among other things the creation of partnerships.

The discussions revealed the need to focus on capitalizing on the results and shortcomings of previous actions (IWRM), creating an institutional foundation to mobilize more partners (various Ministries, UEMOA, CILSS, etc.) and financing, and building capacity, especially in the context of climate change, to produce the Management Plan but also to translate it into concrete and visible actions on the ground.

GWP WA shared its IDMP experience in West Africa, which is already a successful model for synergistic drought management actions in three countries (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger). The team was ensured of GWP WA support and availability to accompany the process.
