GWP-WA involved in a new project to reverse the current trends of degradation of ecosystems and water resources in the Volta river basin

Volta Basin Authority together with IUCN, UN Environment Programme and Global Water Partnership West Africa launched on 25 April 2023 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso a new project called “Reversing Ecosystem and Water Degradation in the Volta River Basin or REWarD – Volta River Basin,

financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by UNEP and IUCN as implementing entities with VBA and GWP-WA as executing partners together with Ministries in charge of water resources in basin countries and other relevant national authorities. The REWarD – Volta River project amounts to US$ 7,122,566for a duration of 5 years.

The official ceremony of the inception workshop of the project was chaired by the Minister of Environment, Water and Sanitation, represented by the Director General of Water Resources, Mr. Cyprien TISSAMBO. Participants include 2 delegates from each of the six Volta Basin member countries, two representatives from each Implementing Partner (IUCN and UNEP) and two from each Executing Agency (GWP-WA and VBA).

Other participants include representatives from ECOWAS, WAEMU, WASCAL, CILSS, ALG, and also experts and resource persons such as the Designated National Authorities of the Green Climate Fund and the Adaptation Fund in Burkina Faso.

The inception meeting was followed by project implementing partners on 27 May 2023 in Ouagadougou.
