GWP-WA Secretariat exchanges with ECOWAS/WRMC to strengthen working ties

Armand HOUANYE together with Yaovi KOGBE, Maxime TEBLEKOU and Sidi COULIBALY exchanged on July 28, 2022, with ECOWAS Water Resources Management Center’s Mr. Bougonou K. DJERI-ALASSANI, Head of Water Governance and Policies Division.

Both institutions have a long-standing collaboration which recorded many recent activities including a regional dialogue in 2019, a regional workshop on the status of IWRM with basin organisations in 2021 and a regional dialogue on the preparation of the 9th World Water Forum in 2022.

In addition, a videoconference was organised in 2022 between GWP (Africa Office and West Africa Office) and the ECOWAS/WRMC to exchange on the African Water Investment Programme (AIP) and the development of a concept note to be submitted to the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The session was initiated and moderated by Mr. Alex Simalabwi, Executive Secretary of the GWP Africa Coordination Unit and Director of the AIP.

These different meetings are accompanied by recommendations that need to be examined in order to assess their level of implementation and the complementary actions to be carried out together. The next steps include the recruitment of a consultant to identify region-wide integrated water investment initiatives together with an assessment of the needs to support their preparation in West Africa. Periodic exchanges between both institutions will be done to make a follow up on actions undertaken.
