Mapping flood and drought vulnerability and capacity at the community level in the Volta Basin

Since the beginning of November, the national portions of the Volta Basin have been hosting the data collection phase of the Flood and Drought Vulnerability and Capacity Mapping mission at the community level.

This mission follows the test application mission organized in Ouagadougou and Ghana between the end of October and the beginning of November 2020 to enable national experts to use the mapping tool to better identify flooded areas and then collect information and data from local populations, local authorities, decentralized and deconcentrated technical services and resource persons using the interview guide.

It is part of the implementation of the Project "Integrating Flood and Drought Management and Early Warning for Climate Change Adaptation in the Volta Basin (VFDM)" financed by the Adaptation Fund and implemented by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) and the Global Water Partnership for West Africa (GWP-WA).

The mapping mission aiming at identifying the multidimensional factors (social, economic, ecological, cultural, political and infrastructural determinants) of vulnerability in the Volta Basin is ongoing on the ground with national experts in the six countries. The national experts are collecting data on the field to better (i) understand the vulnerability and capability factors at each site based on available local information; and (ii) collect information at each site (e.g., the worst-case scenario remembered, and the most frequent scenario), based on local knowledge. Many Volta basin areas are highly exposed to hydrometeorological hazards, such as floods and drought.

Overall, the mission is going very well in collaboration with the deconcentrated and decentralized authorities and the national focal point authorities of the Volta Basin Authority. On a total of Sixty (60) sites, the national experts were able to collect data on about forty (40) sites.
