Mekrou project, a delegation from Niger draws inspiration from the experience of Burkina Faso

A high-level delegation composed of the Secretary General, the Director of Legislation of the Ministry of Water and Sanitation and the Permanent Secretary of PANGIRE Niger carried out a study tour in Burkina Faso from 19 to 23 December 2022, on the theme "integrated management of rainwater for different uses".

The mission allowed the visitors to exchange on and learn from the experience of a third country in the implementation of IWRM in water and economic conditions almost similar to those of Niger.

The activity is organised by the Global Water Partnership in West Africa (GWP-WA), in collaboration with the institutions of Burkina Faso involved in the implementation of IWRM programmes under the coordination of the Permanent Secretariat of IWRM (SP IWRM).

Niger has invested in integrated water resources management (IWRM) as an innovative approach to improve knowledge, protection, better valorisation of water resources for socio-economic development and preservation of ecosystems. The country, through its Ministry of Water and Sanitation (MH/A), is committed to creating a favourable legislative and regulatory environment for IWRM.

The operationalisation of PANGIRE Niger, initiated since the beginning of 2018, has consisted among other things in the creation and installation or revitalisation of coordination bodies at national and regional levels.

To help the country in the sustainable governance of resources by improving the living conditions of the populations, the European Union in Niger has financed the "Water for growth and poverty reduction in the Mekrou sub-basin in Niger" or "Mekrou Phase 2 Niger Project" for the period 2020-2023, the implementation of which is making significant progress.

The visitors exchanged with some seniors agents of the General directorate of the Nakanbé Water Agency in Ziniaré
