Mekrou Project enables 25 women to make market gardening in Belandè, Niger

As part of the implementation of the pilot initiatives of the Water Development and Management Plan (SAGE) of the Niger portion of Mékrou, the Mekrou phase 2 Niger project financed by the European Union has rehabilitated the Belandè multi-village mini drinking water supply system with an extension of the standpipes.

One of these standpipes has been installed in a market gardening site (for women) created as part of this extension. This site is made up of a group of 25 women who produce different crops that they sell on the local market or on the market of the commune of Falmey in the Dosso Region. This site allows these 25 women, all from the village of Belandè, who are as many families, to have some income during the dry season.

The SAGE has been developed by the Mekrou Project Phase Niger 2 to support Niger government in the IWRM implementation in the country. Priority actions were agreed upon with beneficiary in various sites to impact living conditions of the populations as project implementation is coming to closure by June 2023. The implementation started in January 2020 and was impacted by terror attacks that created insecurity in the project implementation zone of the Mekrou sub basin in Niger. But the implementation rate is very satisfying with a budget executive by end of 2022 estimated at 87%.
