Mekrou Project in Niger supports the establishment of IWRM organs in the basin

The Council of the Water Agency of the Mekrou sub-basin in Niger was established on 10 May 2022 in Dosso. The installation workshop served as a framework for validating the Water Development and Management Scheme (SAGE) of the Mekrou sub-basin and its area of influence in Niger, as well as for launching three pilot initiatives for the protection and development of the sub-basin's water resources and related resources.

The workshop is part of the implementation of the project "Water for Growth and Poverty Reduction in the Mekrou sub-basin in Niger (Mekrou Phase 2-Niger Project)" financed by the European Union through its Delegation (DUE) in Niamey and implemented since January 2020 by Global Water Partnership West Africa (GWP-WA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, and the Country Water Partnership of Niger (CWP Niger).

The different colleges have worked together and have set up an office headed by the Mayor of Kirtachi. The members of the three colleges of stakeholders were designated and validated by acclamation. At the level of local authorities, there are 3 women out of 15 and at the level of users, 5 women out of 15. Th establishment of the Council of the Water agency follows the setting up of IWRM management bodies (Water users’ associations and water management committees) in the villages and municipalities in the project area of the Mekrou basin in Niger.

The participants to the workshop were informed and sensitized on the institutional framework of IWRM in Niger while specifying the roles and responsibilities of the Water Agencies, the various colleges of actors of the water agency as well as the criteria of choice/selection of the members of the Council of the Water Agency of the sub-basin of the Mekrou and its zone of influence in Niger. This will be an opportunity to inform stakeholders about the pilot SAGE initiatives supported by the project in the Mekrou sub-basin in Niger, the institutional framework for implementing these initiatives and the official start of activities on the field.

The official ceremony of the workshop was chaired by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Water and Sanitation of Niger in the presence of the Executive Secretary of GWP-WA, the Secretary General of the Governorate of Dosso.
