NBA for a functional platform to manage the W transboundary biosphere reserve

The Niger Basin Authority (NBA) organized from 13 to 15 April 2021 a regional workshop to set up a functional platform for the W transboundary biosphere reserve as part of its support to promote and implement an ecosystem-based approach and IWRM practices through better coordination of interventions related to the complex between the three riparian countries, Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger. The event was held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The workshop gathered participants from regional and national levels to brainstorm on how to set up a functional platform at the scale of the W transboundary biosphere reserve (Benin, Burkina and Niger) taking into account all the area of influence of the Mekrou river basin for the promotion and implementation of an ecosystem-based approach and IWRM practices through better inter/intra-sectoral coordination and at different levels (local, national, transboundary).

The workshop was organized within the framework of the NB-ITTAS Project: Improving knowledge-based resources management, governance and conservation in the Niger Basin and aquifer ecosystems of the lullemeden-taoudéni/tanezrouft region" funded by GEF through UNDP. This project aims to improve the management, governance and conservation of the resources of the Niger River Basin and the Iullemeden-Taoudéni/Tanezrouft Aquifer Systems (ITTAS), to support IWRM implementation for the benefit of communities and to improve ecosystem resilience.
