Nigeria, GWP follows up on the Water and Food Security Initiative

Following the outcome of the Post - National Consultation on Food Security and Water in Sub- Sahara Africa held in Abuja with relevant agencies and department in the Ministry in - charge of Agriculture on 12th May, 2016, a decision was reached to constitute a working group (WG) that will mid-wife the Nigeria - Country Project (WEFE Initiative).

To help the initiative succeed in Nigeria, GWP-West Africa Secretariat requested the WEFE regional coordinator (Dr. Fabien HOUNTONDJI) to pay a mission visit to the Nigerian WEFE team and other relevant stakeholder. The visit was designed and aimed to enhance the understanding of the WG on: the entire initiative, the activities expected to be carried out by the group, guiding the WG on how to profound solution to any possible challenges that arise, project financing, and engaging potential partners and donors. Specifically, the mission visit is scheduled to brief the team (WG) on the nexus initiatives, revisit the project draft to address pending questions, harmonise it with the logical framework submitted and review the activities and finally discuss the funding strategy.

Nigeria mission visit

The meeting between Dr. HOUNTONDJI, the nexus initiative ''Working Group'' and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry in charge of Agriculture and Rural Development took place on 15th and 16th December, 2016. In both meetings, Dr. HOUNTONDJI was able to properly brief the group on the entire nexus initiative and the way forward for the project. In the same vein, the project draft was revisited and was harmonised with the framework.

The Permanent Secretary, in his response to the mission visit promised that the Ministry will give its full weight and support to the Nigeria WEFE Initiative Country Project.  In all, the visit by Dr. HOUNTONDJI was quite appreciated and is of huge benefit to the Nigeria project.
