Steering Committee meeting of the Mekrou phase 2 Niger

On 13 May 2022, the second meeting of the Steering Committee (SC) of the "Water for Growth and Poverty Reduction in the Mekrou sub-basin of Niger" Project (Mekrou Phase 2-Niger Project), financed by the European Union through its Delegation in Niamey, was held in Dosso.

This 2nd SC meeting comes after two years of implementation of the Mékrou Phase 2-Niger Project by the Ministry of Water and Sanitation (MHA), through the Permanent Secretariat of the National Action Plan for Integrated Water Resources Management (SP/PANGIRE) in collaboration with Global Water Partnership West Africa (GWP-WA) and the Country Water Partnership of Niger (CWP Niger).

The Mékrou Phase 2-Niger Project contributes to the implementation of the National Action Plan for Integrated Water Resources Management (PANGIRE, 2017-2030) in the Mékrou sub-basin and its area of influence in Niger. It aims to "support green economic growth and poverty reduction in the Niger portion of the Mekrou River sub-basin and its zone of influence". To this end, the project has planned to set up and support the animation of IWRM bodies in the Mekrou sub-basin and its influence zone in Niger as well as the finalization of the Water Development and Management Plan (SAGE) of the same territorial space.

The official opening ceremony of the meeting was chaired by the Secretary General of the MHA, Mr. Maman MOUSSA, in the presence of the Deputy Secretary General of the Dosso Governorate, Mr. Azizou HALILOU, the Programme Officer of the EU delegation of Niamey, Mr. Marcello ROCCA, the GWP-WA Executive Secretary, Mr. K. Armand HOUANYE, the chair of the CWP Niger, Mr. Nazoumou YAHAYA and the Permanent Secretary of the monitoring of the implementation of the PANGIRE, Mr. Issoufou SANDAO.

The main results of the meeting include the adoption of all the documents presented and the recommendations, among other things:

- to ensure the effective realization of the concrete actions listed in the technical and financial documents of the priority initiatives of the SAGE pilot implementation;

- to take the necessary measures for the installation in the near future of equipment for collecting data on water resources in the field with the holding of capacity building sessions for the actors in order to produce the reports provided for this purpose in the logical framework of the project;

- to develop a precise, realistic and achievable timetable for the implementation of the project by the end of June 2023 by strengthening the close monitoring mechanism.
