Supporting VBA on Integrated Flood Management

From 20 to 27 June 2018, a mission of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) composed of consultants Caroline WITTNER and Ramesh TRIPATHI visited Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso.

This mission hosted by the GWP/WA and the Executive Directorate of the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) is part of the final drafting phase of the detailed project document on "Integration of flood and drought management and early warning for climate change adaptation in the Volta Basin".

This project submitted to the adaptation fund and available on the site www.adaptation-fund.org has already passed the conceptual note and brief proposal stages.  During the visit of the WMO missionaries, key stakeholders in the six countries bordering the Volta Basin were contacted to gather their main expectations and needs regarding droughts and floods in order to better inform the detailed project document.

The mission also seized the opportunity to visit flood sites located on the Burkinabe and Togolese portions of the basin. The Manouri site located downstream of the Kompienga dam and the Kompienga dam sites and vulnerable communities located in peri-urban flood zones (Kouritenga and Tabtenga) in the commune of Loumbila in Burkina Faso wre visited.  The beneficiary populations welcomed this initiative. The Secretary General of the Loumbila commune, Mr Rasmané NIKIEMA said: "The commune is committed to putting in place all measures for data collection and support for the implementation of the initiative in the areas affected by climate hazards in the Loumbila
