Tripartite partnership CWP-SUA & NIYEL to promote hygiene practices in Benin

In March 2020, CWP-Benin, and Speak Up Africa (SUA) signed a partnership agreement for a grant of approximately Three million (3,000,000) CFA francs over a period from March to August 2020. This fund is intended to carry out a plea for a better management of the sanitation issue in Benin.

The activities are focusing the advocacy for the vote of the law on Public Hygiene in Benin, which has been sent to the table of the Deputies at the National Assembly since 2013 and which has not yet been voted.

The advocacy process started with the establishment of a Committee which drafted a Policy Note explaining the ins and outs of the advocacy for the vote of the said bill of Law. A request for a hearing has just been sent to the President of the National Assembly to which the Policy Note was attached.

Collaboration between CWP-Benin and NIYEL started in 2019. Based in Dakar, NIYEL is a civil society organization that supports the capacity building of stakeholders in the water and sanitation sector in West Africa. This type of collaboration was done with other countries of the sub-region including Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal. In 2019, the collaboration was extended to Benin and Mali. At NIYEL's request, during a workshop organized in Dakar in January 2020, each of these countries has elaborated an action plan in order to carry out communication and advocacy actions in the field of sanitation. NIYEL submitted these action plans, elaborated with its technical support, to Speak Up Africa (SUA) which agreed to finance them for some countries including Benin.

Indeed, SUA is a non-profit Civil Society organization, engaged in strategic communication and advocacy dedicated to catalyzing African leadership, fostering policy change and raising awareness about sustainable development in Africa.

NIYEL is a company that supports Civil Society Organizations in West Africa in promoting advocacy for urban and rural sanitation (solid and liquid waste).
