In spite of local uncertainties about the intensity and variability of climate change, it is urgent to initiate adaptation measures in river basin management, including transboundary basins. This publication provides guidance on how to prepare and implement a strong, realistic and operational medium-to-long-term plan for adapting to climate change through a number of case studies and “lessons learned”. This Handbook was produced jointly by GWP and the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO) in order to capture experiences with planning and implementing IWRM.

The factsheet highlights the goals, approaches and achieved results of WACDEP in Bugesera region as well as thewayforward in building community resilience to climate change.

This case study describes the impact of the World Bank feasibility report on the cooperation over transboundary water resources between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

The first dam on the Lower Mekong River Mainstream, Xayaburi was notified to the Lower Mekong Countries in 2010. The public consultations took place in each country. The result favoured the construction to be postponed for 10 years to allow further study.

The Drin River is a complex transboundary water system and a strategic developmental resource for its riparian states in South Eastern Europe.

This paper focuses on IWRM experiences in Central Asia where the major rivers flow from the headwaters in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan to the downstream Fergana Valley in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Water demand in the region is dominated by energy requirements and irrigation. This paper draws lessons from introducing IWRM at many different levels of management – from interstate, to national and district level.
