Water is not just part of the economy; it is embedded within the economy. Without water, the economy could not function. Thus water has the potential to lead the process of ‘greening’ the world’s economies. This is a Perspectives Paper, meant to incite a discussion on important issues related to water and development.

The Lake Moyua in Nicaragua is characterized by vibrant natural resources of great scenic and natural value, but the area experiences soil degradation. The Lake is part of the watershed of “Sistema lacustre Playitas-Moyua-Tecomapa, located in the dry zone of northern Nicaragua. This area has recently been designated as a Wetland of International Importance (under the Ramsar Convention). The degradation that has occurred is a result of inappropriate agricultural and livestock practices that encourage destruction of forest areas by slash and burn and habitat destruction leading to disappearance of flora and fauna. In addition, other activities such as hydrological regime modifications, uncontrolled bird hunting, water pollution both surface and groundwater due to agrochemicals as well as reduction of water flow in tributaries has further contributed to this degradation. Coupled with wide degradation, the lake area is also vulnerability to climate change which is especially experiencing droughts and this urgently calls proper adaptation measures. This report considers the current challenges of preserving ecosystems in two regions, the South Caucasus (Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia) and Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan), within the framework of the specific program of the Global Water Partnership. This report analyse current conditions of inland waters’ ecosystems and develops proposals on their preservation and protection against the increasing devastation processes.

Настоящий доклад посвящен современным проблемам сохранения водных экосистем двух регионов: Южного Кавказа (Азербайджан, Армения, Грузия) и Центральной Азии (Казахстан, Кыргызская Республика, Таджикистан, Узбекистан, Туркменистан), являющихся участниками программы Глобального Водного Партнерства. Доклад является продолжением аналитических исследований, ранее проведенных Региональным Экологическим Центром Центральной Азии (РЭЦЦА) по состоянию обязательств, принятых странами Центральной Азии для достижения ЦРТ.

Water, Food and Environment: Dialogue on the Implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive in Agricultural Water Management in the CEE Region

This paper analyses the relations between human society, water resources and ecosystems. It aims to clarify why and how vital ecosystems have to be protected and to indicate how this effort can be better incorporated into IWRM practices. This is a Technical Background Paper, written by the GWP Technical Committee, a group of internationally recognised professionals in integrated water resources management.
