Capacity building for the Benin WASH Alliance

The  Members of the Benin WASH alliance composed of national and international NGOs involved in the water and sanitation sector in the country, the country Coordinator and Dutch partners of WASTE and ICCO followed this workshop held from 25 to 28 February 2013.

IMPLEMENTATION

The programme runs from May 2011 to April 2016. Initially, WACDEP starts in eight African countries and five transboundary river basins / aquifers all over the continent.

The Challenge

Urgency for a Water Secure World

 

Throughout the planet, a number of issues affecting the availability and state of water resources cause a growing concern. The population is increasing. Pollution is increasing. Development pressures are mounting. However, water supply is not. Water demand by people, agriculture, food production and industry heavily pressurizes the limited water supply of the planet and ecosystems which are also dependent on water.

Water Management, Water Security and Climate Change Adaptation: Early Impacts and Essential Responses

This paper explores the role that IWRM needs to play in climate change adaptation. It outlines the social, economic and environmental impacts of climate change; the challenges it poses for water resources management; the actions needed to address those challenges; and approaches to financing IWRM for climate change adaptation. This is a Technical Background Paper, written by the GWP Technical Committee, a group of internationally recognised professionals in integrated water resources management.

A Handbook for Integrated Water Resources Management in Basins

This handbook articulates the links between pressures and IWRM responses. Drawing on many experiences around the world, it provides practical guidance for improving the governance of freshwater resources through effective application of the IWRM approach in lakes, river basins, and aquifers. This Handbook was produced jointly by GWP and the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO) in order to capture experiences with planning and implementing IWRM.

Adoption of Strategy waits for political resolution

With the technical and administrative support of GWP Mediterranean in the framework of MED-EUWI, the Water Expert Group of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) put the draft Strategy for Water in the Mediterranean before the UfM Ministerial Conference on Water in April 2010.
