Gambia and Sierra Leone next on the agenda

West Africa now has 12 Country Water Partnerships (CWP). All  ECOWAS countries have one except The Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone. In 2009 contacts were established with these countries and strong demand had been expressed to assist in the implementation of the CWP in each country.

The Ouagadougou Declaration

At the end of the West African Water Ministers Conference on IWRM (WAC/ IWRM) on 3 to 5 March 1998 in Ouagadougou, a consensus document called "Ouagadougou Declaration" was made public. It is considered as the commitment of ECOWAS for the implementation of IWRM in the region.

RAP/IWRM-WA

After the conference of water ministers on IWRM in March 1998, West Africa adopted a regional plan for integrated management of water resources (RAP/ IWRM / WA). This plan is an essential component of the regionalwater resources policy.

Sierra Leone ready to launch CWP

The water stakeholders in Sierra Leone agree to establish a National Water Partnership (CWP) at a meeting held December 23, 2011 in Freetown. The consultative meeting was convened to validate the feasibility study for the creation of a CWP in the country.

GWP Med in the DIKTAS Project

The DIKTAS Project (2010 – 2014) is initiated by the aquifer-sharing states and is a full-size GEF regional project, implemented by UNDP and executed by UNESCO. The activities of the project focus on Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Montenegro. Several other countries and international organizations have also joined this challenging project and provide valuable contribution to realisation of its objectives.
