The African Union Commission, in partnership with the Global Water Partnership Africa, is fast-tracking climate finance readiness across the continent through the AU-AIP GCF Readiness Support Initiative, now being implemented in 15 AU Member States. Over recent months, the initiative has recorded tangible milestones that demonstrate growing institutional capacity, stronger investment preparation, and Africa’s readiness to absorb and deploy climate finance at scale.
A significant number of reservoirs and lakes in the Danube River Basin area have relevance in flood peak reduction. The countries in the river basin maintain contact and exchange of information only within bilateral cooperation. Therefore, first, there is a need for carrying out a comprehensive survey of the flood control practices and operational management of the reservoirs, and second to create a common platform for information exchange.
Mali has taken a decisive step in the sustainable management of its water resources by officially launching the process to develop its National Water Investment Programme (PIE).

Ouagadougou, January 8, 2025 – The headquarters of the Global Water Partnership West Africa (GWP-WA) hosted an official handover ceremony between the Acting Executive Secretary, Mr. Sidi Coulibaly, and the new Executive Secretary, Mr. Amadou Lamine Ndiaye.
Over 70 representatives from fifteen African Union Member States gathered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from the 13 - 14 February 2025 for a training on AU Guidelines for the development of National Climate Resilient Water Investment Programmes. The training was part of the build-up to the 2025 AU-AIP Water Investment Summit which South Africa will host in the context of the G20 Presidency, and the 2026 UN Water Conference to be co-hosted by the United Arab Emirates and Senegal.
The African Union Commission has trained representatives of Ministries of Water from African Union (AU) Member States in developing Climate Resilient Water Investment Programmes and Green Climate Fund Projects. The training which preceded the AU-AIP Water Investment Summit, took place from 11 to 12 August 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa.
