Approximately 150 households within the Mt Granby and Mt Nesbit communities in St. John’s, are poised to benefit from enhanced access to water, following the commissioning of a refurbished Community Water System. This initiative marks a significant milestone for the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean and the organisation's ongoing efforts to ensure a water secure Caribbean. Water scarcity has long been a pressing issue in these two communities, because of the old leaky pipes which resulted in increased abstraction of water from the source and reduction in the flow of water into the stream it feeds. This has impacted daily life and economic activities including agriculture, health, and overall quality of life of community members.
COP29, the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference, will take place from 11–22 November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan. With a focus on driving global climate action, COP29 will highlight adaptation, resilience, and nature-based solutions and will mark the launch of the Baku Dialogue on Water for Climate Action.
The 25th WaterNet/WARFSA/GWPSA Symposium will be held from 30th October to 1st November 2024, at Avani Maseru Hotel, Maseru, the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. On 25 October 2024, the Swedish Minister of Development Aid, Benjamin Dousa, announced in an interview published in the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) that Sweden would be initiating action to end the Host Country Agreement with GWPO and withdraw formally from the Organisation.
On the occasion of the 10th Meeting of the Parties (MOP 10) to the Water Convention from 23 to 25 October 2024 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the Global Water Partnership in West Africa (GWP-WA), the West African Economic and Monetary Union Commission (WAEMU), the Pôle Eau Dakar, Secretariat of the Water Convention and the United Nations Environment Programme - DHI Centre (UNEP-DHI), FAO co-organised a side event on the theme of ‘Implementing the Convention and promoting integrated water resources management through national and regional action’.
The Mediterranean WEFE Nexus Community of Practice (CoP) was officially launched during a landmark event in Larnaca, Cyprus. By fostering partnerships, facilitating knowledge exchange, and leveraging its network of demonstration sites as living laboratories, the CoP aims to promote sustainable solutions across sectors and regions.
The recent article in Svenska Dagbladet on 19 October, reporting on GWP’s finances, presents a biased and incorrect picture of the organisation. The article fails to take into account the major shift in development aid financing generally that has also affected GWP, and it does not report on the extensive development of programme and project financing that GWP has secured in recent years.
