From November 4 to 6, 2025, Bamako hosted a pivotal regional workshop under the REWaRD project- “Reversing Ecosystem and Water Resources Degradation Trends in the Volta Basin.” Implemented by the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) and the Global Water Partnership – West Africa (GWP-WA), with support from UNEP, IUCN, and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the project aims to strengthen ecological resilience and participatory governance across six West African countries.

Burkina Faso, a Sahelian country with essentially rain-fed water resources, is experiencing a depletion of its water resources at a time when the demand for water for households and development needs is increasing. This has a negative impact on the quality of available resources, particularly due to pollution of various origins.
The Pungwe River Basin originates in the eastern highlands of Zimbabwe and flows through Mozambique into the Indian Ocean. About 5 % of the basin area is in Zimbabwe, with the remainder in Mozambique. However, about 28% of basin flows are generated on the Zimbabwean side. The basin is rich in plant and animal diversity, which is constantly under threat from anthropogenic activities.

In a significant step toward inclusive and sustainable water governance, Ghana has officially launched its National Coordination of Users of Natural Resources in the Volta Basin. The initiative was formalized during a national workshop held in Bolgatanga, as part of the broader mission to establish and strengthen national and regional user coordination structures across the Volta Basin.
