Alignment and harmonization of individual workstreams as well as counterpart workstreams by all technical partners of the UNDP-GEF Limpopo project is critical to the success of the project. This was the key message that came out of the Integration Workshop for the project “Integrated Transboundary River Basin Management for the Sustainable Development of the Limpopo River Basin,” held on 7-8 February 2024 in a hybrid format coordinated from Pretoria, South Africa. The GEF-funded project is being implemented by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with Global Water Partnership Southern African (GWPSA) as the regional executing agency.
Researchers from the COST Action Circular City community published an expert-based analysis of barriers and strategies for the implementation of nature-based solutions.
Within the framework of the implementation of the Project "Reversing the trends of Ecosystem and Water Resources Degradation in the Volta River Basin (REWarD - Volta River Basin)", financed by GEF and executed by VBA and GWP-WA in close collaboration with UNEP and IUCN, a small technical team coordinated by GWP-WA met in Koudougou from February 19 to 24, 2024, to update the Communication Strategy and Action Plan 2018-2020 drawn up in 2028.
GWP-Med has long experience in implementing corporate water replenishment projects, helping companies like Coca-Cola meet their water replenishment targets through focused interventions. These technical water saving solutions are part of integrated programmes which also engage stakeholders in effective water governance, raise awareness and promote environmental education. Several projects incorporating technical water saving solutions have also been implemented as pilot demonstrations through funding by public donors.
Tanzania has launched response strategies that will support the country in resolving the country’s three major barriers to water resources management. Launched during the 2024 National Multi-Stakeholder Forum (NMSF) on 11th and 12th February, the strategies were developed under the Global Water Leadership Programme (GWL) which the Global Water Partnership Tanzania was implementing in collaboration with the Government of Tanzania. The GWL programme, a global initiative to support emerging leadership for improved water, sanitation and hygiene services, and climate resilience, is being implemented in various countries including Tanzania.
Representatives from Lebanese ministries joined a field visit to Nexus related projects in the Shouf region in Lebanon, aiming to address trade-offs across different sectors and generate socioeconomic and environmental advantages, organised by GWP-Med within the framework of the GEF UNEP/MAP MedProgramme.
Burkina Faso, with the financial and technical support of the Secretariat of the Water Convention, has organized a national workshop to inform stakeholders about the process of acceding to the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes. GWP-WA provided technical and financial support for this national meeting.
The Mono Basin Authority (MBA) held the sixth (6th) ordinary session of its Council of Ministers on January 26, 2024 in Lomé, Togo. This meeting was preceded by the meeting of the Technical Committee of Experts (CTE) from January 22 to 25.
