The Maltese Islands have limited freshwater resources and depend heavily on desalination. Therefore there is an evident need to mobilise non conventional Water Resources (NCWR) in order to secure water availability and facilitate sustainable development.
In June 2010 the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) El Salvador proposed that GWP Central America and GWP El Salvador should facilitate processes to develop a water policy, a national water strategy and an IWRM plan.

The workshop on Xiangjiang River Basin Management, organized by GWP China Hunan, was held on November 24 -25, 2011 in Hengyang, Hunan Province with over 70 participants from governmental agencies, research institutions, universities and NGOs. A Capacity Building Workshop on "Integrated Management of Shared Lakes Basins", was organised in Ohrid FYR Macedonia, 16-18 July 2008 by the Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean (GWP-Med) and the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO/ECSDE) in cooperation with the GEF/UNDP "Integrated Ecosystem Management in the Prespa Lakes Basin of Albania, FYR-Macedonia and Greece" project and the FYR Macedonian Ministry for Environment and Physical Planning.
